Photographer & Designer: half artist, half coder

HELLO. I’M A PHOTOGRAPHER & A DESIGNER

At the age of 10, my mom gave me a disposable camera before I left for summer camp. This was my first shot at being a photographer, and I have let to put my camera down. I started making t-shirt designs for my friends and student organizations in middle school, and found my love for graphic design in high school when I placed in the 16th in the nation for Advanced Desktop Publishing at BPA (Business Professionals of America). My freshman year at UNI, I fell in love with Graphic Technologies program that allowed me to explore and master all my favorite things; graphic design, web design & development, print, and photography.

I graduated in May 2017 with a B.A. in Graphic Technology and a minor in Criminology. I have over 5 years of experience in design for both print and digital. I design with beauty and simplicity in mind.

Event/Concert Photography: Capturing Moments

I have always been a fan for event/concert photography. I loved that within only a second, you could capture such raw emotion. You can capture the music following through the musicians, and you can really feel the music through photos.

Unlike many other genres of photography, event photography is something that you have to pay close attention too. In a blink of an eye you can miss a memorable moment. Especially when photographing clients, missing a moment can change everything.

Graphic Designer: Aspiring to Inspire

I started my career as a graphic designer in 8th grade. I designed whatever was in front of me,  whether is was making binder covers or t-shirts. I went into high school, and I fell in love with journalism. In my Beginning Journalism class, we were introduced to Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. I quickly caught on to these programs, and I have never stopped learning more about the programs. My Senior year in high school I participated in Business Professionals of America (BPA), I competed in Graphic Design and Advanced Desktop Publishing. I placed 2nd in the state of Iowa for Graphic Design, and 3rd in Iowa for Advanced Desktop Publishing. I later competed in Nationals.  I placed in the top half for Graphic Design and 16th in Desktop Publishing.

Coming to the University of Northern Iowa, I’m majoring in Graphic Technology, and Interactive Digital Studies, with a minor in Criminology. I am the Publicity Co-Executive for Campus Activities Board and an active member in Concerts committee. I am also the Managing Editor for the campus newspaper, The Northern Iowan. I design the layouts for our bi-weekly paper, and I manage the website, www.northerniowan.com.

Forensic Photography: Capturing Crime

In college with a Criminology minor, I spent some of my time studying crime scenes. With a passion for photography,  forensic photography was where they both met. I decided my semester in Undergraduate Photography studying ways that photography was used in a crime scene and techniques professionals used. All the photos are not from actual crime scene.

The following presentation about Forensic Photography, is made using interactive InDesign and Flash.
